A  Festival to Celebrate “Great Russian Literature and Language”

The Russian Language is the native language of 170 million people, one of the six official languages of Organization of the United Nations, and 350 million people can understand Russian. This is the language spoken by 100,000 people living in Texas.

  • The festival “Great Russian Literature and Language” is dedicated to popularizing the RUSSIAN language and literature, as well as raising the public consciousness of the image of the Russian culture and to support the preservation of the unique Russian traditions.
  • The purpose of the festival is to facilitate the recognition of the cultural uniqueness of the Russian-speaking community and promote Russian culture through educational, cultural and philanthropic activities. The main goal of the Festival is to demonstrate some of the talents our children, teenagers and adults have, to inspire creativity, to show the value and significance of Russian literature and culture in our life.
  • The Festival will be held March 15th – May 24th, 2009.
  • The Festival activities includes:
An Essay Contest “Great Russian Books” for children 10-18 years old (See attachment 1)
A Drawing and Craft contest for children 4-18 years old (See attachment 2)
An Essay and Poetry writing contest for Russian speaking Texans (open to all ages)
A competition in the intellectual game “What? Where? When? ”
A performance by the Russian Theatre of Houston devoted to 200th anniversary of the Russian and Ukrainian writer Gogol N.V.
A performance by the Russian Children Theatre “JOY”
A performance by the folk groups “Russian Lace” and “Sunrise”
  • Contest Awards:
The finalists in all the contests will receive awards for each age group: The First Prize (The Winner’s Diploma) and the Memorabilia Prize (“pamyatny priz”). Contest participants will also be awarded special prizes for originality and design.
  • The award ceremony will be held at the Festival of Great Russian Literature and Language on May 24st, 2009, which is also the Day of Slavic Culture and written language, at 3 p.m. in DEMER`s (8225 Cantrell, Houston, Texas, 77074)
